Sloughi
Description
The Sloughi, sometimes called the Arabian Greyhound, hails from North Africa—Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This breed has roots stretching back centuries, prized by desert tribes for its speed and hunting skill. Sloughis chase hares, gazelles, and wild boars with sleek, powerful grace. They carry themselves with quiet dignity and a reserved nature. Though calm and gentle at home, Sloughis can sprint with surprising bursts of speed when the moment calls for it. They tend to keep to themselves around strangers but bond deeply with family members. This breed is sensitive and independent, responding best to kind, patient training. Sloughis usually get along with children and dogs they grow up with but may not mix well with small pets due to their hunting instincts.
Grooming
Sloughis have short, smooth coats that shed lightly to moderately. Their fur lies close to the skin and shows off colors like sandy, cream, mahogany, and red. Patterns include black masks, brindle, mantly, and darker overlays. Keep their coat healthy with weekly brushing using a rubber curry or bristle brush to remove loose hairs and distribute natural oils. Bathe them every 4 to 8 weeks—don’t overdo it, as their skin can dry out. Trim nails every 2 to 4 weeks to avoid cracking or splitting. Check ears monthly for debris or buildup, wiping gently if needed. - Brush weekly with rubber curry or bristle brush - Bathe every 4–8 weeks - Trim nails every 2–4 weeks - Clean ears monthly - Pro tidy as needed Pro tip: Use a damp cloth to spot-clean darker mask areas to keep them looking sharp without over-bathing.

Walking
Sloughis need about 65 minutes of walking daily, usually in one session. They enjoy steady, moderate exercise that lets them stretch their legs without overdoing it. A single walk works well for this breed, but it should be long enough to satisfy their natural urge to run and explore. They’re not barkers, so walks tend to be peaceful and focused. Example routine: - 10 minutes warm-up walk at a relaxed pace - 40 minutes of steady trotting or light jogging - 15 minutes cool-down with sniffing and slow walking This routine helps keep their muscles toned and minds engaged. Sloughis appreciate a calm environment during walks, so avoid crowded or noisy areas when possible.
Boarding
When boarding a Sloughi, provide a crate sized between 42 and 48 inches to accommodate their lean, athletic build comfortably. They prefer calm surroundings and benefit from daily exercise paired with quiet decompression time afterward. Staff should introduce themselves slowly and predictably to build trust with this reserved breed. Enrichment should focus on gentle play and mental stimulation rather than high-intensity games. Puzzle toys, scent work, or quiet chew items work well. Sloughis don’t thrive in chaotic or noisy settings, so keep routines consistent and low-key. Staff should note their sensitive nature and avoid sudden loud noises or rough handling. With the right care, Sloughis settle quickly and enjoy relaxed downtime between activity sessions.
